ICI Caldaie was chosen to work with lead contractor Vital Energi on the construction of a carbon reducing £10 million community heating system for the Athlete’s Village in Glasgow, as Scotland’s largest city strives to host the ‘Greenest Games ever’ as part of a wider sustainability initiative.

Having worked in partnership on other prestigious schemes in the past, notably MediaCityUK in Salford, specialist sustainable energy company, Vital Energi, awarded ICI Caldaie the contract to manufacture, supply, deliver, offload and commission three high-efficiency 3MW gasfired boilers complete with Dunphy Burners that will form part of the development’s new bespoke energy centre.

“When we were awarded the Commonwealth Games Athletes’ Village (CGAV) contract – probably one of the most prestigious and high profile that Vital Energi has worked on as a company - we had to decide on our supply chain and sub-contractors very carefully,” said Andrew Whitelock, Vital Energi’s Senior Quantity Surveyor.

“From past experience we were confident that ICI Caldaie would provide us with the quality of service, lead time and cost needed to satisfy our client within what was a tight timeframe. They did not disappoint.”

Now successfully completed the purpose-built energy centre, which contains Combined Heat and Power (CHP) technology, will deliver all the heating and hot water for the development through a 28km buried network of pre-insulated pipes which connect the 704 ‘eco-friendly’ homes in the Athletes’ Village, the Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and a 120-bed care home.
